Stove Top Potpourri

I thought today would be a good day to freshen up the general scent in our house. I've been making this potpourri for years, and my mom has been making it as long as I can remember. If you do try it, just be sure to watch the water level...you want to keep everything floating, so that it doesn't burn...not a pretty smell! :-P

One orange, sliced(or the peels of a few)
One apple-green is pretty!-, sliced (again, just the peels can be used!)
One lemon, sliced
Two or three cinnamon sticks, broken into a few pieces (you can use ground cinnamon, but it's not nearly so pretty!)
A small handful of whole cloves
Ground nutmeg is nice in this too, but you don't need to much of it!

Cover with water in a small-med. sized sauce pan, and simmer. Just add fresh water as needed. You can "freshen" this by just adding peels/fruit/spices as you think they're needed. Really any combination of these things will make a pleasant smell, I've done as little as boiling cinnamon and cloves! Remember to check your water level every hour or so!
